Sunday, Jun 18, 2006, Page 3
The Kaohsiung City Government recently announced an urgent request for English-language speakers to serve as volunteers during the 2009 World Games to be held in the southern port city. It hopes to recruit 10,000 volunteers for the city's World Game Volunteer Group by the end of 2008, according to the City Bureau of Social Affairs, which said that at present the group comprises only 2,500 volunteers. The group will offer a wide range of services, including reception, airport assistance, emergency medical treatment, healthcare, environmental protection, as well as staffing the command center and media center. To ensure the success of the games, the city government will hold three international sports events -- a Dragon Boat competition, an Asian skating game championship and a rock climbing contest -- in September and October, as part of its preparations for the World Games.
