Hsinchu giving sport and exercise a substantial boost

    CNA, TAIPEI
    Sunday, Jun 18, 2006, Page 2

A total of 60 government agencies and private organizations in Hsinchu City have planned nearly 100 sporting events this year in the hope of encouraging people to play sports or exercise, Hsinchu Mayor Lin Junq-tzer (林政則) said over the weekend.

Lin, a member of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), expressed his hope that the number of participants will surge to 100,000 people this year.

The plan is part of the Multiplied Sports Population Project that the National Council on Physical Fitness and Sport (NCPFS) launched in 2002 to encourage improvements in fitness levels.

The project is seeking to increase the number of participants in sports by 50,000 each year from 2002 to next year.

The planned sports programs in Hsinchu cover swimming, dancing, mountain climbing, roller-skating and ball sports. Information is available at the city government's Web site www.hceb.edu.tw/index.aspx.
