MOEA chief's Indonesian visit helps to secure energy supplies

Minister of Economic Affairs Morgan Hwang (黃營杉) said on Tuesday that the government had reached an agreement with Indonesia on cooperation in energy resources development to ensure stability in supply.

Hwang made the remarks after wrapping up a two-day visit to Indonesia, where he attended a ministerial-level bilateral economic conference, the first since 2001.

Indonesia attaches great importance to trade with Taiwan, he said.

Hwang met with Indonesian Vice President Mohammed Yusuf Kalla and the ministers of energy, mineral resources and trade.

Indonesia has reaffirmed its supplies of liquid natural gas and coal to Taiwan under a previous contract, he said, and expressed an interest in cooperating with Taiwan in developing energy resources. Jakarta invited Taiwanese enterprises to set up naphtha cracking plants in Indonesia, a prospect which Hwang said Taiwan needed to examine.

Hwang said Indonesia would send a trade delegation to Taiwan in August. He also said he had invited the minister of industry to visit Taipei in the near future to strengthen bilateral exchanges.
