Proposal to amend Constitution has backing for vote

More than 60 legislators from across the political spectrum have endorsed a proposal to push for a new round of constitutional amendments to pave the way for adopting a Cabinet system of government, sources close to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Chai Trong-rong (蔡同榮) said yesterday.

The number of lawmakers endorsing the Chai-initiated proposal has reached the threshold stipulated, thus enabling legislators to vote at a legislative session on whether or not to put the motion to a national referendum, the sources said.

According to legislators who signed the proposal, it also urges that the ratio of regional legislators and at-large legislators for the seventh legislative elections next year be revised and that the number of leats be increased, starting from the 2011 election.
