Health department says dental hygiene slowly improving

The number of times that Taiwan-ese brush their teeth every day has increased, but one-quarter of respondents in a health survey admitted that they do not normally brush their teeth before going to bed, the Department of Health said on Friday.

The department and the National Health Research Institute surveyed more than 20,000 people between April and August last year to explore whether they maintain good oral hygiene.

The average number of times that respondents brush their teeth every day increased slightly to 1.87 from 1.81 in 2001, with children less than 12 years of age showing the greatest increase.

The survey also found that on average, women brush their teeth 1.98 times a day, compared with 1.76 times for men.
