Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) said yesterday that military personnel deployed to help dredge rivers and dams should look upon such work as part of their routine training as well as "helping to solve problems that affect the public."
Accompanied by Minister of National Defense Lee Jye (李傑), Army Commander-in-chief Hu Cheng-pu (胡鎮埔) and officials of the Water Resources Agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Su inspected dredging operations at one section of the Shihmen reservoir in Taoyuan County.
Su said that 1 million people depended on the Shihmen reservoir, which also met the water demands of agriculture and industry in the greater Taoyuan area.
The military's assistance in removing sediment from the reservoir helped to prevent water shortages and was highly commendable, he said.
