The Legislative Yuan yesterday passed a resolution to support Taiwan's bid to become a member of the World Health Assembly (WHA), saying it would urge China not to prevent Taiwan from joining health organizations.
The resolution was proposed by the Democratic Progressive Party caucus and obtained the unanimous support of the other political parties on the legislative floor yesterday.
According the resolution, in light of the proliferation of bird flu across the world, it is urgent that Taiwan become a member of the WHA.
The legislature therefore passed the resolution to support the government's bid to win membership in the WHA and actively participate in international health and epidemic prevention organizations.
The resolution made a note of the fact that the ruling and opposition parties were unanimous in their support for WHA membership. The resolution urged China to respect the will of the people of Taiwan, and not to prevent Taiwan from becomiung a member of the WHA during the 59th WHA meeting in Geneva in July.
"We urge China to respond with real goodwill to Taiwan's request," the resolution said.
