Taiwan Quick Take: Audio site launched

    AGENCIES
    Sunday, Apr 30, 2006, Page 3

A digital audio Web site using Mandarin was inaugurated earlier this week in Taipei and its operators claim it is the first of its kind in the world. The Web site, at www.audiopie.com, was created by National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, which is cooperating with several local publishing, broadcasting and technical firms to offer audio versions of books and magazines online. Visitors can download audio products -- either for permanent use by paying a fee, or for temporary use by paying a monthly rental charge. The site's operators said that at least 30 audio books covering various fields would be made available online every month. All copyrights have been authorized. The Web site is the brainchild of the university's Digital Creation Industry Development Center, which was funded with NT$100 million (US$3.13 million) donated by Stan Shih (施振榮), founder of the Acer Group.
