Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Yu Shyi-kun yesterday urged former Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman Lien Chan (連戰) to confirm with Chinese President Hu Jintao (胡錦濤) whether the idea of "one China with each side having its own interpretation" was the consensus agreed to by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the KMT at a 1992 meeting in Hong Kong.
"The KMT has proclaimed this, saying it for more than a decade. Yet China has denied it 10 times," Yu said. "Whether one China with each side having its own interpretation exists remains an unsettled issue of controversy between the KMT and the CCP. If the KMT does not solve it, cross-strait relations will be affected."
Yu made the remarks after a closed-door meeting with AIT Director Stephen Young at DPP headquarters yesterday.
Lien left yesterday at the head of a large delegation of KMT officials and KMT lawmakers, as well as a media contingent, for Beijing to attend a CCP-KMT economic summit.
Yu said that while KMT Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (
"Therefore, if one China with each side having its own interpretation is not clarified, it will be impossible to implement the modus vivendi proposed by Ma," Yu said. "Hu cannot avoid responding regarding this unsettled issue."
Yu said Ma had promised President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) he would suggest that Lien bring up the issue when he meets with Hu. The DPP would observe whether Lien acted according to Ma's suggestion, he said.
"If a party chairman can make a promise to the president yet fail to ask a party member to carry it out, it is doubtful that the chairman holds real power in the party," Yu said.
Meanwhile, DPP legislative caucus whip Chen Chin-jun (陳景竣) yesterday accused pan-blue camp lawmakers of neglecting their duties and going to "worship China with Lien," saying they viewed China as their mother country.
"We also urge China to talk to Taiwan's government about economic issues. If China intentionally talks with the opposition party, it shows that it means to degrade Taiwan's government with the tricks of its unification war," Chen Chin-jun said.
A group of Taiwanese-American and Tibetan-American students at Harvard University on Saturday disrupted Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng’s (謝鋒) speech at the school, accusing him of being responsible for numerous human rights violations. Four students — two Taiwanese Americans and two from Tibet — held up banners inside a conference hall where Xie was delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference 2024. In a video clip provided by the Coalition of Students Resisting the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Taiwanese-American Cosette Wu (吳亭樺) and Tibetan-American Tsering Yangchen are seen holding banners that together read:

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said.
