Taiwan Quick Take: Human traffickers foiled

    Sunday, Apr 02, 2006, Page 3

Coast guard officers arrested 12 illegal Chinese immigrants on a fishing vessel off the coast of Fangyun in Changhua County yesterday. The Coast Guard Administration (CGA) had deployed special patrols around northern Taiwan over the past few days after receiving tipoffs that a human trafficking ring was preparing to ship illegal Chinese immigrants into Taiwan. Early yesterday morning, a patrol boat spotted the Tsai Ting Lai -- a plastic raft registered in Chiayi County -- 9.2km off the coast, and ordered it to stop. However, the raft sped up to try to escape and after a 15-minute chase, the patrol boat stopped and boarded the raft, on which CGA personnel discovered the illegal immigrants -- 11 men and one woman.
