Taiwan Quick Take: El Salvador resistant to PRC

    Saturday, Apr 01, 2006, Page 4

Banking and business groups petitioned El Salvador President Elias Antonio Saca on Thursday to consider establishing diplomatic relations with China. But Saca said the businessmen already engage in commerce with China without any problems, and that he could not bow to Beijing's conditions to sever links with Taiwan. "The problem is when China asks for relations with El Salvador, and asks us to cut off relations with Taiwan, and that cannot be accepted by El Salvador. We are free to open diplomatic relations with whomever we wish," he said. Salvadoran businessmen and bankers suggested on Thursday that establishing relations with China would help their business. El Salvador is one of the few countries in the world which maintains formal ties with Taipei and does not have diplomatic relations with China. According to the central bank, El Salvador exports to China last year totaled US$2.5 million, while it imported US$145.4 million worth of goods from China.
