The Coast Guard Administration seized 20kg of amphetamines and 2kg of marijuana seeds with an estimated value of NT$50 million (US$1.6 million) near an uninhabited islet known as Little Orchid Island (小蘭嶼) on Monday. A spokesman said the coast guard had been monitoring the movements of the drug smugglers for the past year. The smugglers allegedly used fishing boats to transport drugs from China. A coast guard task force boarded and inspected a suspicious fishing boat in waters near Little Orchid Island on the afternoon of March 20. Two members of the task force later found the amphetamines and marijuana seeds stashed under pieces of wood floating nearby.
