The new American Institute in Taiwan Director Stephen Young said yesterday that he will ask President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) to clarify whether the National Unification Council (NUC) exists or not when he meets with the president today. Young said he believes Chen froze the NUC, rather than disbanding it, when he announced it would "cease to function" on Feb. 27, but intended to clarify the matter. "I think it [the NUC] has been put in abeyance. So the question really is whether that exists and that's something I want to talk about ... with the president," Young told reporters prior to a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang (黃志芳) yesterday. Regarding US-Taiwan relations, Young said "I think they are good and they are full of challenges that we are going to work together to resolve [through] the spirit of mutual trust."

The US approved the possible sale to Taiwan of fighter jet spare and repair parts for US$330 million, the Pentagon said late yesterday, marking the first such potential transaction since US President Donald Trump took office in January.
