Lu says she would welcome a new probe

    By Ko Shu-ling
    STAFF REPORTER
    Monday, Mar 20, 2006, Page 3

Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) said yesterday that although she respects the findings of the judicial investigation into the election-eve assassination attempt, she hopes that the new state public prosecutor-general will institute a fresh probe into the matter after he takes his oath of office.

Lu reiterated her opposition to the legislature's forming a second truth committee because she said such a move would not only encroach on the judiciary's authority, but also damage the constitutional system.

Lu said that, under the Constitution, the executive, legislative and judicial branches each have their own areas of authority and that she did not want to see the legislative branch step on the toes of the judicial branch.

Lu said that she hoped the legislature would speedily confirm President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) nomination of Hsieh Wen-ting (謝文定).
