Taiwan Quick Take: One-third want independence

Thirty-three percent of people polled by the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) support Taiwanese independence, while more than the 26.9 percent favor maintaining the cross-strait status quo and 21.8 percent prefer unification. The poll was released yesterday, ahead of the SEF's 15th anniversary today. The survey also showed that 43 percent of respondents identified politically with the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), while 21 percent supported the Democratic Progressive Party. The People First Party and the Taiwan Solidarity Union received about 2.5 percent and 5.4 percent of support respectively. The poll was conducted on Monday and Tuesday, with a total of 1,149 valid samples and a 2.89 percent margin of error.
