"Because of historical issues, Japan has caused many controversies with China and South Korea. We hope Japan will not create any controversy with Taiwan due to these historical issues," Huang told reporters yesterday.
The foreign minister made the comments yesterday in the legislature in response to Aso's remarks last weekend. The Japanese foreign minister claimed that it was as a result of Japan's colonization of Taiwan from 1895 to 1945, during which compulsory education was implemented, that Taiwan's education was of a high standard.
"Because of the endeavors of the Japanese colonial government, Taiwan's education and literacy standards were raised significantly and that's why Taiwan now has a very high education level that keeps up with the current era," Aso said on Saturday.

Considering that most countries issue more than five denominations of banknotes, the central bank has decided to redesign all five denominations, the bank said as it prepares for the first major overhaul of the banknotes in more than 24 years.
