EU-China relations are to `depend on rights'

CNA , PAIRS

Taiwan's top official in Brussels said on Thursday that slow progress made by China on its human-rights performance could cast a shadow over EU-China relations.

Chen Chien-jen (程建人), the nation's representative to the EU's headquarters in Belgium, made the remarks following the European Parliament's passage that same day of a joint resolution urging Beijing to cease its persecution of Christians.

According to Chen, freedom of religion is part of human rights and was one of the topics discussed by the EU and China during their summit meeting held in Beijing earlier this week.

Chen noted that members of the parliament are concerned about the human-rights situation in China.
