A film festival entitled "Music in Taiwan and Mandarin Films: A Companionship" (聲影紀事:台灣及華語電影的音樂情旅) will be held from Aug 12 to Aug 26 at the SPOT-Taipei Film House, located at Chungshan N. Rd No.18, Sec. 2 in Taipei.

The festival is sponsored by Council of Cultural Affairs and the Government Information Office.

The event will feature selected Chinese films with classic songs to remind movie goers of the beauty of ancient Chinese culture.

"Music really counts in movies. Sometimes, we suddenly recall a fragment in movies just because of the songs. To boost Chinese movies, we must make use of music which can truly link the emotions of the audience to the plot," said globally-acclaimed director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) at a press conference yesterday.

The event organizer, Lan Tsu-wei (藍祖蔚), expressed regret that some classic, decades-old films will not be screened during the festival, because many older movies have been lost or damaged due to poor storage facilities.

"I still intend to reconstruct the images and sound in Chinese from a different age and reintroduce famous Chinese soundtrack composers, such as Shih Che-yung (史擷詠), Wung Ching-hsi (翁清溪), Yao Min (姚敏), Chou Lan-ping (周藍萍) and Chao Chi-ping (趙季平)," Lan said.

For more information about the event, visit the Web site www.artsticket.com.tw, or the SPOT-Taipei Film House's site at www.spot.org.tw.
