President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) yesterday called on the public not to be reluctant to donate blood, especially in the summer months when a lack of blood is expected because the regular blood donation operations in schools will be halted during summer vacation.
Chen made the appeal while receiving over 30 acclaimed blood donors at the Presidential Office. Each of the donors have donated blood more than 140 times, while one of the five female donors among them -- Jao Chiu-yun -- has donated blood 506 times.
The president expressed his admiration and gratitude to the donors for their "life-saving deed," saying that generously donating blood is a "valuable life-caring action."
After 31 years of efforts to promote blood donation around the country, Taiwan has seen success, with the "donation-supply balance" reaching 7.9 percent, well above the internationally recognized standard of 5 percent, Chen said.
