Lien Chan's son to seek election as KMT delegate

Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan's (³s¾Ô) son, Lien Sheng-wen (³s³Ó¤å), decided yesterday to enter the election for KMT delegates.

He is scheduled to register on Monday for the delegates' election, which is slated for July 16 when a new KMT chairman and 1,000-odd KMT delegates will be elected by some 1 million KMT members nationwide, a source from the party's Organization and Development Department said.

The KMT is scheduled to convene a national congress Aug. 19, during which a total of 210 delegates will be elected to the Central Committee. About 200 candidates for the committee will be chosen by the newly-elected KMT delegates, and another 200 candidates will be nominated by the new KMT chairman, the official said.

After the 210 new Central Committee members are elected, the new KMT chairman will nominate some of the Central Committee members and the Central Committee members will endorse some of the members for the election for new KMT Central Standing Committee members, numbering 31, the official said.

Lien Chan's aides have declined to confirm whether his son will seek to be elected as a KMT Central Committee member.
