Thunderstorms and heavy rains to hit the country: CWB

    STAFF WRITER, WITH CNA
    Tuesday, May 10, 2005, Page 2

As another stationary front swept across the country, all the residents of Taiwan and its outlying islands should be alert for heavy rains and thunderstorms today and tomorrow, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) reported yesterday.

The CWB issued a heavy rain and thunderstorm warning yesterday afternoon for Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu, urging residents to carry umbrellas and raincoats to keep from getting wet.

In addition to the heavy rains, residents should beware of gusting winds and thunder in the affected areas.

Also, residents in remote mountainous areas should be alert for potential mudslides and landslides triggered by heavy rains.

With the coming of the rains and thunderstorms, the temperature is expected to cool down a little across the country. The bureau said that today and tomorrow's temperatures will hover between 20?C and 27?C in the north, 24?C to 28?C in the central region, 22?C to 27?C in the eastern region, and 26?C to 30?C in the south.

The rain will continue until tomorrow in the north and central region of Taiwan, with the rainy conditions likely to continue in the south until next week, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, the bureau also issued warnings against gusty winds and torrential rains in the Bashi Channel, the Pratas (ªF¨F) Islands and Taiwan's north, northeastern and southeastern offshore areas.

The CWB's fishery forecasts for Taiwan Coastal Waters warned all ships in the Bashi Channel the Pratas Islands and the offshore areas to be alert to gusting winds accompanying the showers and thunderstorms.
