A retired Taiwanese archbishop said Taiwan would not resist if the Vatican wanted to cut ties so that it could be recognized by China, where millions of Roman Catholics worship illegally, a Hong Kong newspaper reported yesterday.
The Vatican has not announced that it wants to end its ties with Taiwan, although Hong Kong Bishop Joseph Zen (³¯¤é§g) last month said the Holy See was willing to cut those links.
The Apple Daily yesterday reported that Joseph Ti (¨fè), the retired archbishop of Taipei, said the Taiwanese government would not try to block the Holy See from ending the diplomatic relationship. The report didn't elaborate on why Taiwan would not try to block the move, but quoted Ti as saying that it would not have a major impact on the Taiwanese church.
Ti was also quoted as criticizing China's fear that recognition of the Vatican would allow it to interfere with the country's affairs.
