People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) will commence an eight-day trip to China next Thursday, following in the footsteps of Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) counterpart Lien Chan (連戰), who will return from China on Tuesday.
PFP Secretary-General Chin Chin-sheng (秦金生), who traveled to China to hammer out the details of Soong's trip, told a press conference yesterday that the visit would be dubbed a "journey of bridge-making."
Chin led an eight-person delegation to China on Monday. After negotiations with Chinese officials that lasted 57 hours, Chin and the delegation returned on Tuesday.
The trip will take Soong to Xian, Nanjing, Shanghai, Changsha and Beijing, where he is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao (胡錦濤).
Soong will visit the mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor in Xian and the mausoleum of KMT founder Sun Yat-sen (

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
