Law firm offers reward for capture of ex-employee

STAFF REPORTER

The prominent Taiwanese law firm Lee and Li Attorneys-at-Law is offering a award of NT$1.5 billion for information leading to the capture of Eddie Liu (劉偉杰), one of its senior legal assistants, who allegedly embezzled NT$3 billion and disappeared in August 2003.

Liu was listed by prosecutors as one of the nation's 10 most wanted fugitives since he fled in 2003. Police suspect that Liu fled to Hong Kong and then China.

Local Chinese-language media reported that police had hoped to hear from Chinese police regarding their search for Liu, but so far, there has been no response from Chinese officials.

According to the latest information obtained by police, Liu may have left China and fled to one of the US-controlled islands in the Pacific. Noting that they have yet to obtain specific information on Liu's whereabouts, police said it would seek assistance from the International Criminal Police Organization.

The money Liu stole was actually the firm's fees for handling a share sale on behalf of one of its clients -- the California-based SanDisk Corp, the world's biggest maker of flash-memory cards used in digital cameras and music players.
