New Cabinet running into difficulties

DISSATISFACTION The new Cabinet chief was forced to cancel a joint meeting with the pan-blues, while the PFP is a little disgruntled now, too

As an indication of the uncertainty between the new Cabinet and opposition parties in the legislature, Cabinet Secretary-General Lee Ying-yuan (李應元) failed to meet with the legislative caucuses of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and the People First Party (PFP) yesterday as planned.

While Lee was originally set to meet with the KMT, Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU), and PFP caucuses yesterday, he was forced to cancel his morning meeting with the KMT because of unexpected responsibilities elsewhere.

Lee's meeting with the PFP was also cancelled yesterday by the PFP, citing its dissatisfaction with the recent raid on nine offices of chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp (UMC, 聯電).

Lee's remaining meeting with the TSU yesterday was rocky, with Chinese-language media reporting that Lee was left to wait for ten minutes in the TSU's caucus office by party officials who were reportedly unhappy with the symbolic meeting between Presidential Office Secretary-General Yu Shyi-kun and PFP Secretary-General Chin Chin-sheng (秦金生) that took place yesterday morning.

However, Lee claimed yesterday that no top government officials have ever interfered in a judicial investigation into an alleged scandal involving UMC.

Lee Ying-yuan made the remarks at the Legislative Yuan while answering questions from reporters regarding the high-profile case.

He said the government will manage the case concerning UMC's alleged illegal investment in a Chinese wafer foundry, the He Jiang Technology Co, under the law and will allow law-enforcement units to conduct an independent investigation.
