US expected to rethink its Taiwan role

SECOND TERM New officials are likely to seek to put their own stamp on US-Taiwan relations and cross-strait issues and perhaps may seek a more active policy role

Washington will "review the situation where the United States has to confront a growing desire on the part of the Chinese to expend their sphere of influence. I think in the end we will run up against a confrontation on that issue," he said.

"Where this leaves Taiwan-US relations is up to Taiwan," he said, pointing to the deliberations on the US$18.2 billion US arms package.
