A fishing boat was seized by Philippine fishery authorities and its crew members detained after it entered Philippine waters.
It was the second time in a month that a Taiwanese fishing vessel had been seized by Philippine authorities for entering its territory.
Taiwan representative to the Philippines Wu Hsin-hsing (§d·s¿³) said the Keelung-registered ship, Changlung No. 8, was intercepted by a Philippine patrol boat 24km off Leyte Province early yesterday. On board were captain Chi Lung-tsun (¬öÀs§ø), chief engineer Wu Chin-sheng, 11 Chinese crew and one Vietnamese crewman.
The ship has a fishing agreement with Indonesia and was on its way there, Wu said.
Authorities suspected that the ship was poaching, but Chi claimed he only took the route because he wanted to avoid a typhoon.
Wu noted that since the presidential election in the Philippines in May, authorities have cracked down on trespassers and poachers. He urged Taiwanese fishing vessels to exercise the utmost caution.
