The fishing boat Yi Fa arrived back safely at Kaohsiung Harbor early yesterday morning following an attempted kidnapping of four Taiwanese crew by seven Chinese deckhands.

The boat was met at 8am yesterday by coast guard officials and several ambulances. The officials said that several crew sustained minor injuries to their hands and feet, but that the alleged leader of the kidnappers, Yang Zhiping (·¨§Ó¥), was the most seriously injured, with a knife wound to the stomach.

Yang was taken to Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital for treatment, while his six alleged accomplices were detained by the coast guard for interrogation.

The coast guard yesterday said that it was about to begin an investigation into the attempted kidnapping of the four Taiwanese crew. Investigators boarded the ship the moment it docked in Kaohsiung Harbor.

The coast guard said it had learned of the situation aboard the Yi Fa when a distress call was sent on Thursday. A coast guard patrol was able to intercept the Yi Fa on Monday at about 12pm.
