Teacher enshrined as Chiayi's first non-military hero

Chiayi teacher Lin Li-man (林麗滿), who died in a traffic accident while on a field trip with her students last October, was enshrined at the Chiayi Martyr's Shrine yesterday.

A memorial tablet engraved with Lin's name and her story was installed at the Chiayi Martyr's Shrine in a ceremony led by Chiayi County Commissioner Chen Ming-wen (陳明文), making the teacher the first non-military person to be memorialized in the shrine.

Lin, escorting students from Meishan Junior High School on a graduation trip to Hsinchu on Oct. 24, suffered a serious head injury when their bus crashed head-on with a truck. Lin died before she reached a hospital. The bus driver and two students also died.

Addressing attendees at the ceremony, Chen said that Lin is worthy of high respect for her dedication to her students.

More than 100 people from the military, the Chiayi County Government and the Chiayi County Assembly, as well as Lin's family, colleagues and students took part in the ceremony.

They observed a minute of silence before Lin's tablet was enshrined to pay tribute to the teacher. Lin obtained her master's degree in Chinese literature studies at National Taiwan Normal University, had won the top prize in a teachers' writing contest in Chiayi, and had won championships in table tennis in southern Taiwan.
