Water experts tap pools of knowledge in Russia

    CNA, MOSCOW

Officials and specialists from Tai-wan and Russia gathered in Moscow on Monday for the first Taiwan-Russia Water Resources Conference to discuss hydrology, fresh water resources management and related technologies.

The participants struck an agreement that the two countries will engage in bilateral exchanges in water resources management and related technological fields on a regular basis in the future.

The 12-member Taiwanese delegation, comprised of officials from the Water Resources Agency, as well as academics from univer-sities and representatives from the private industrial sector, was led by agency Director-General Chen Shen-hsien (³¯¦ù½å).

The Russian delegation was comprised of academics and specialists from the water resources research institute under the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Russian expertise and research in water and ocean resources is renowned worldwide. The Russian "water" researchers have long been keenly interested in Taiwan's research in the same field.

Most of the Russian participants said that they were amazed at the depth and scope of Taiwan's research in hydrological sciences, water resources management and related technologies, particularly in the integration of public water utilities and related technologies. One participant said that he has gained unexpected knowledge about his particular field after coming in contact with Taiwan's research.

The Taiwanese delegation will also attend ECWATECH-2004, the sixth International Trade Fair and Congress Water, this week in Moscow.
