The internal struggle within the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) Justice Alliance faction heated up yesterday as a legislator-at-large from the alliance, Cheng Kuei-lien (鄭貴蓮), accused the faction's secretary-general, DPP Legislator Tsai Huang-liang (蔡煌瑯), of preventing Cheng and her husband, former interior minister Yu Cheng-hsien (余政憲), from running in the legislative election.
Cheng went so far as to call Tsai, the newly-appointed Cabinet spokesman Chen Chi-mai and another legislator-at-large, Gao Jyh-peng (
"I feel really sad and cold about this, and these people still pretend in front of the media. They are humans with the hearts of beasts," Cheng said.
Cheng and her husband Yu, who is serving as the alliance's chairman, both obtained forms for registration, but failed to register for the primary before the deadline.
On the other hand, Tsai originally planned to run for another term in his own constituency, but changed his mind to run for legislator-at-large.
Cheng said that the legislators she mentioned weren't favored by President Chen Shui-bian (
To counter Cheng's accusation, Tsai called on Yu to appear in front of the media to clear the air, while Yu responded that he did not plan to run.
"I hope to take a break for a while, and I do not plan to run in the legislative election," Yu said. Yu then hung up the phone, after saying thank you to the media.
Tsai said that he had confirmed with Yu his unwillingness to run before he decided to run.

A Philippine official has denied allegations of mistreatment of crew members during Philippine authorities’ boarding of a Taiwanese fishing vessel on Monday. Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) spokesman Nazario Briguera on Friday said that BFAR law enforcement officers “observed the proper boarding protocols” when they boarded the Taiwanese vessel Sheng Yu Feng (昇漁豐號) and towed it to Basco Port in the Philippines. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is pushing for residents of Kinmen and Lienchiang counties to acquire Chinese ID cards in a bid to “blur national identities,” a source said. It has also intensified its ‘united front’ efforts and infiltration of those islands,” the source said. “There is increasing evidence of espionage in Kinmen, particularly of Taiwanese military personnel being recruited by the
