President Chen Shui-bian (
Accompanied by Nantou County Commissioner Lin Tsung-nan (
Chen was briefed by local officials on the progress of a community development project that began in the village at the end of 1999.
The village currently has about 160 households with 800 residents. More than 90 percent are Aboriginal.
Chen said that although many Aboriginal villages had been recovering well from the destruction caused by the earthquake, the commission had allocated another NT$240 million this year to finance reconstruction and development in affected Aboriginal communities.
With government assistance, Chen said, Hsinhsiang village, together with Hsinchu County's Chienshih township and Kaohsiung County's Sanmin township, had become model Aboriginal communities after the implementation of integrated development programs carried out over the last four years.
The programs include reconstruction and development of infrastructure, as well as cultural and personal development, Chen said.
After listening to the briefing, Chen was entertained by a group of elementary school students who performed Bunun tribal music and dance.
Following the tour, Chen and the officials proceeded to Hsinglung village in Shuili township, also in Nantou County, to inspect the progress of a river streamlining project.
The 921 earthquake killed about 2,400 people and left some 100,000 homeless.

Four students — two Taiwanese Americans and two from Tibet — held up banners inside a conference hall where Xie was delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference 2024. In a video clip provided by the Coalition of Students Resisting the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Taiwanese-American Cosette Wu (吳亭樺) and Tibetan-American Tsering Yangchen are seen holding banners that together read:

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said. Highs recorded in other areas were 38.7°C in Kaohsiung’s Neimen District (內門), 38.2°C in Chiayi City and 38.1°C in Pingtung’s Sandimen Township (三地門), CWA data showed. The spell of scorching
