Winners of Department of Health-sponsored medical awards will be recognized today at a ceremony in Taipei for their contributions to medicine and public welfare.

"These recipients are like candles in today's society, lighting up the areas where they work," said health agency Director General Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁).

Eleven awards will be handed out today at the ceremony for the 14th annual Distinguished Medical Devotion Awards.

This year's special recognition award will be presented to Chao Co-shi (趙可式), a professor at National Cheng Kung University's College of Medicine and founder of the Catholic Sinopax Socio-Medical Service and Education Foundation, in recognition of her efforts to promote death with dignity.

Chao's work led to the passage of the Tranquil and Moderate Medical Treatment Act (安寧緩和醫療條例), which gives patients with terminal illnesses the right to refuse life-support equipment.

This year's group award will be presented to the Tzu Chi International Medical Missions Association for its outreach efforts in this country and abroad. Since its formation in 1998, the group has provided assistance in more than 10 countries and has provided over 650 free clinics to places where medical help is normally unavailable.

Nine other individual awards will be given to healthcare workers in various fields. Among those honored will be: Kung Wan-chin (龔萬進), who will be recognized for over 55 years of work in the industry; Su I-ling (蘇逸玲), recognized as one of the first nurses to care for AIDS patients in this country; Huang Feng-ming (黃鳳銘), who will be celebrated for seeing patients for 57 years in Lukang township's medical clinic; and Luis Gutheinz of Fu Jen Catholic University, who will be honored for his work in establishing the China Leprosy Service.
