The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received no information to suggest that Liberian President Charles Taylor might flee here as wire services have speculated, ministry officials said yesterday.
US President George W. Bush has been pushing Taylor to step down as quickly as possible to accelerate a peace process in the African country's civil war.
Nigeria has reportedly considered offering Taylor asylum, although he might also consider fleeing to South Africa or Taiwan.
Taylor has visited Taiwan several times, however, ministry officials said they have not received any information about Taylor seeking asylum here.
They noted that Ambassador to Liberia Chen Yeo-chio (³―₯ΓΊο) has relocated his embassy operations to the Ivory Coast for safety reasons.
As for concerns that Beijing might use Liberia's political chaos as an opportunity to steal Taiwan's ally, the officials said that they remain optimistic about the steadfastness of bilateral ties and also noted that Liberian Ambassador John Cummings had just represented the entire diplomatic corps in offering congratulations to Taiwan after it was removed from the World Health Organization list of areas with SARS transmissions on Saturday.
