Family asks for help in finding missing student

By Monique Chu  /  STAFF REPORTER , WITH AGENCIES

Taiwanese student Wu Chung-li (巫春莉) has been missing in New York City for more than 10 days and even missed her flight to Taiwan on Friday, triggering anxiety from her family about her whereabouts.

Wu's uncle, Wu Peng-tian (巫本添), held a press conference in New York City on Friday to call for help from the press in the search for his 36-year-old niece.

Wu Chung-li disappeared on Christmas Eve after she returned to Manhattan from a skiing break with a group of Taiwanese overseas students in Pennsylvania, according to her uncle.

The woman, who has been pursuing her Master of Business Administration degree at St. John's University in New York, did not even appear at the airport on Friday evening for her China Airlines flight back to Taiwan for a break, her uncle said.

Wu Peng-tian expressed his worry about his niece saying he's not sure whether she has taken enough medicine with her during the past 10 days so as to control her chronic depression.

Wu Chung-li's mother is slated to leave for New York City next week to search for her daughter, Wu Peng-tian said.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York helped Wu's family arrange the press conference, as well as assisting with other pertinent matters in the wake of her disappearance.

The ministry will also help Wu's mother arrange her trip to the US, Chang added.

Hsieh Chih-chung (謝志忠), head of the Taiwanese students' association at St. John's University, said Wu Chung-li has been very independent and has had few contacts with Taiwanese students at the university since she began her studies last September.

Wu Peng-tian said his niece had found herself a Caucasian boyfriend during her stay in New York, although she has never revealed the name of the man in question.

Wu Peng-tian also said that the family has so far been unable to locate the whereabouts of his niece's boyfriend.
