"When two Cambodian families, with a total of 19 members, received the newly-built houses in a donation ceremony, they all showed heartfelt gratitude," Wang recalled. "Their thankful smiles were unforgettable. They made me come to know for the first time that I could influence other people's lives."

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are co-sponsored by the US-based Pruco Life Insurance Co and the National Volunteers Association (NVA) of the ROC. The 30 winners, most of them senior high school students, were selected from among 1,422 youth volunteers recommended by 315 high schools around the nation.

The award-presentation ceremony will be held tomorrow at Taipei's Grand Formosa Regent Hotel. President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) will meet with all the winners on Friday.
