Spinner Nayeem Hasan yesterday claimed a match haul of nine wickets as Bangladesh thrashed Zimbabwe by an innings and 106 runs inside four days in their one-off Test.
The big victory in Dhaka ended a six-match losing streak for the hosts and handed Mominul Haque his first win as Test captain.
Zimbabwe, who trailed by 295 after the first innings, were all out for 189 in the second session, with Nayeem returning figures of 5-82.

Nayeem was supported by fellow spinner Taijul Hasan, who took four wickets as Zimbabwe lost batsmen at regular intervals after resuming on 9-2, although skipper Craig Ervine (43) and Timycen Maruma (41) offered some resistance.
Mushfiqur Rahim set up the win with his unbeaten 203 as the hosts declared their innings on 560-6 on Monday, in response to Zimbabwe’s 265.
Mominul struck his first century as Test captain with a 132 and put on 222 runs with Mushfiqur to set the tone for his team’s dominance.
“Everyone did well and I am happy for the team. We tried to put up a big score and we were able to get that,” said Mominul, who became captain in November last year. “I don’t think it is a difficult start to my captaincy career. Yes, we have to win more matches, but we will do better.”
Taijul took the final wicket of Charlton Tshuma as the home side celebrated only their second innings victory.
Taijul began the victory push for Bangladesh on the fourth day when he sent back Kevin Kasuza for 10 in the sixth over of the morning session.
Nayeem, who claimed two wickets in the first over of Zimbabwe’s second innings on Monday, took the key scalp of senior batsman Brendan Taylor, who top-edged a catch to Taijul at long-leg for 17.
Ervine and Sikandar Raza defied the bowling to put on 60 runs for the fifth wicket, but then Ervine’s run-out dented Zimbabwe’s hopes.
Raza set off for a single off Taijul, but Mominul broke the stumps at the striker’s end with a direct hit from cover-point to end Ervine’s promising innings.
Mushfiqur took a brilliant reflex catch at mid-wicket off Taijul to end Raza’s innings, before Tamim took another spectacular catch at mid-on to remove Regis Chakabva for 18.
Nayeem trapped Ainsley Ndlovu leg before wicket for 4, before completing his five-wicket haul with the wicket of Timycen Maruma. He ended with match figures of 9-152.
Tshuma unsuccessfully reviewed a leg before wicket off Taijul to become the last man dismissed as Bangladesh ended their six-match losing streak in Tests.
Zimbabwe’s Ervine, who scored 107 in the first innings, said his side did not capitalize after winning the toss and batting first.
“It was nice to get some runs in the game, but it was one of those disappointing games that we have to put behind us,” Ervine said. “We probably just did not kick on from the start and we definitely needed more than 260 in the first innings.”
Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season, tasking him with leading the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League. “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honor,” said Carrick, 44, who won 12 major trophies in his 12-year playing career at United. The former midfielder previously had an unbeaten three-game stint as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in 2021. Carrick then took on his first permanent managerial role at second-tier Middlesbrough in October 2022 and was sacked in June last year after the club finished 10th in the
MARRED FINAL: As most of Senegalese players walked off the pitch after a controversial decision, some supporters threw objects and attempted to get onto the pitch Senegal on Sunday won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner sunk hosts Morocco 1-0 after a chaotic final that saw the eventual champions storm off the pitch late in the game. Brahim Diaz could have won the trophy for Morocco with a controversial spot-kick in the 24th minute of added time at the end of normal time as ugly scenes broke out in the stands. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy easily saved the weak attempted “Panenka” chip by the Real Madrid winger, who was clearly distracted by the long delay that followed the penalty award.
James Harden on Friday scored 31 points and came up big in overtime to help the Los Angeles Clippers erase a double-digit deficit on the way to a 121-117 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors. Harden scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Clippers pushed their wining steak to five games despite the absence of star Kawhi Leonard with a sprained right ankle. The Clippers trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but Harden drilled a pair of free-throws with 1:24 left in regulation to tie it and after misses from both teams, they went to
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg on Wednesday was ruled out for the second half of their 118-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets after the No. 1 pick sprained his left ankle in the first half. Flagg was called for a foul while defending against Peyton Watson and turned the ankle as he fell to the floor with 6 minutes, 1 second left in the second quarter. Flagg limped to the bench and continued to the locker room, but returned for the final 2 minutes, 35 seconds before the break. The 19-year-old did not come out for the second half before the announcement that
