A full house is expected at the Banciao Gymnasium in New Taipei City this afternoon for this season’s All-Star weekend in the Super Basketball League (SBL).
The annual mid-season gala, which is intended to showcase the league’s best talent, was set to feature a near-all Taiwan Beer starting lineup for Team Red, with fan favorite and media darling Liu Cheng leading a Brew Crew quartet of Chiang Yu-an, Lu Chi-min, and Patrick O’Bryant, with the Dacin Tigers’ Chou Yi-hsiang completing the lineup.
However, O’Bryant and Lu were scratched from the lineup by league officials earlier this week and are set to be replaced by the Tigers’ Shih Yen-tsung and Bryan Davis, and there will be plenty of action for Taiwan Beer fans to cheer with the Brew Crew’s Chou Po-Husan, Yu Huan-ya and Chang Yung-hsuan also making the roster as alternates.
Taking on Team Red in this year’s competition will be a Yulon Luxgens-heavy lineup for Team White, led by three-time Player of the Week winner Lu “Male Model” Cheng-ju and fellow guards Chen Chih-chung and Ko Min-hao, along with Pure Youth Construction’s Doug Creighton and Chen Tzu-wei.
Prior to the All-Star Game, which is slated to start at 6:15pm, the All-Star weekend will also feature the annual Three-Point Shootout at 3pm which will determine the top three-point threat in the league, followed by the Skill Challenge and the highly anticipated Slam Dunk Contest.
With results of the fan-based voting clearly reflecting Taiwan Beer, Pure Youth, the Dacin Tigers and the Yulon Luxgens’ popularity, the league has slowly developed into a two-tier system, with the aforementioned clubs representing one tier and the Fubon Braves, Kinmen Kaoliang and Bank of Taiwan representing the other.
The league has yet to publish any attendance or merchandise statistics, but the two-tier nature of the competition could lead to a greater problem down the road for the overall long-term health of the league.
Yu Yao-hsing on Tuesday nabbed Taiwan’s only goal in the final round of qualifiers for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, as they fell 3-1 to Sri Lanka at Taipei Municipal Stadium. Early goals from Sri Lanka in the first half left Taiwan struggling to get on the board, and Christopher Tiao’s own goal at 53 minutes sealed the team’s fate in the third round of qualifiers. While acknowledging that the defeat, Taiwan’s sixth in Group D, was disappointing, head coach Matt Ross said he saw reasons to stay positive about the team’s development. “There were lots of positive signs in terms of the

Iraq, whose preparations were disrupted by the war in the Middle East, sealed their first appearance at the finals in 40 years and are to play in Group I against France, Senegal and Norway. “I don’t remember the moment, but ever since I was a kid, that’s the first thing I loved,” two-time NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas said of his lifelong romance with basketball. However, that journey unfolded against the limitations of his size in a game where height often dictates opportunity — a reality he confronted throughout his career. At 175cm, Thomas is less than 2cm taller than the average Taiwanese adult male, while NBA players during his career stood at about 200cm on average. Compared with the NBA’s average career length of less than five years, Thomas’ 13-season career stands out as
Teng Kai-wei, the only Taiwanese player on an opening-day roster in this year’s Major League Baseball (MLB) season, took his first win of the year with the Houston Astros in his season debut. Teng entered in relief in the top of the fifth inning against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, with the Astros trailing 5-0. He pitched 2-1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, as Houston scored 11 runs during his outing to snatch an 11-9 comeback victory. The win is the Astros’ first of the season and the third of Teng’s MLB career. “It’s my first time pitching for the Astros, so
