Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei overcame a determined second-set fightback to stun the second seed at the WTA 125K tournament in Hua Hin, Thailand, yesterday.
The Kaohsiung-born world No. 107 downed Chinese world No. 70 Zheng Saisai 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 in a topsy-turvy second-round match in 1 hour, 57 minutes on Center Court.
Hsieh saved three of six break points and converted five of 16, surviving a fierce second-set comeback by the second seed to win 85 of the 158 points contested.
The victory evened up Hsieh’s career record against Zheng at 3-3.
The Taiwanese lost their first encounter in the quarter-finals in Taipei in 2010, but won their next clash in the final of an ITF tournament in Wenshan, China, in 2012. She beat the Chinese again in Beijing the same year, but then suffered defeats in Ningbo, China, last year and earlier this year in Strasbourg, France.
In the quarter-finals today, Hsieh, who won an ITF tournament in Nanjing on Sunday, faces another Chinese player, Wang Qiang, who advanced by downing fellow countrywoman Wang Yafan 6-3, 6-1.
Also advancing to the quarter-finals was another Chinese, Duan Ying-ying, who stunned Japanese fifth seed Kurumi Nara 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, while fourth seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan advanced by ousting Chinese qualifier Chang Liu 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.
