Borussia Dortmund ran riot on Wednesday as they demolished second-division SC Paderborn 07 7-1 to book their place in the third round of the DFB Pokal.
With top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the bench, winger Gonzalo Castro was Paderborn’s main tormentor with two goals and two assists in Dortmund’s biggest win of the season so far.
Paderborn took a shock lead through former VfL Wolfsburg striker Srdjan Lakic after 21 minutes, but it lasted just four minutes as Thomas Tuchel’s team let the goals fly.

Colombia striker Adrian Ramos slotted home the hosts’ first, then set up Castro, before Japan international Shinji Kagawa netted just before the halftime whistle to make it 3-1 at the break.
Dortmund’s German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan then netted a penalty, before Castro claimed Dortmund’s fifth.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan set up Lukasz Piszczek for a tap in, then slammed home the seventh himself just before the final whistle.
It was the first defeat Paderborn’s new coach, former Germany international Stefan Effenberg, had suffered in his three games since taking charge.
“We’re happy with the amount of goals and chances we created,” Dortmund coach Tuchel said. “The manner of the win was also pleasing, and perhaps the early goal we conceded gave us the necessary sharpness and concentration.”
It was the highest score of the second-round matches, which also saw Bayern Munich knock out holders Wolfsburg with a 3-1 away win on Tuesday.
Dortmund, who thrashed Augsburg 5-1 on Sunday, have now scored 61 goals this season in just 19 games and are second in the Bundesliga behind runaway leaders Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, Schalke 04 suffered their second defeat in three days against Borussia Moenchengladbach as they bowed out of the cup with a 2-0 defeat in Gelsenkirchen.
Having lost 3-1 at ’Gladbach on Sunday in the league, the Konigsblauen were beaten again as Lars Stindl pounced on a Joel Matip mistake to claim their first just before the break.
Belgium’s Thorgan Hazard, brother of Chelsea’s Eden, then slotted home a penalty to compound Schalke’s misery.
Nigeria striker Anthony Ujah broke the hearts of supporters of his former club Cologne to seal Werder Bremen’s 1-0 win at the Weserstadion.
Mexico striker Javier Hernandez has now scored five goals in just three games for Bayer 04 Leverkusen as they romped to a 6-0 win at Viktoria Cologne.
Vikoria finished with 10 men when defender Markus Brzenska was sent off with 15 minutes left and the score was 4-0.
The fourth-division minnows enjoyed a sellout gate of 6,166 against their Bundesliga neighbors, who had to travel just 12km.
In the night’s other matches, Augsburg won 3-0 at SC Freiburg, VfB Stuttgart defeated Carl Zeiss Jena 2-0, Eintracht Braunschweig routed SSV Reutlingen 05 4-0 and Heidenheim edged SV Sandhausen 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The

Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
