Real Madrid moved four points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a 2-0 win at Elche on Sunday.
After passing up a host of chances in the first half, Madrid finally made the breakthrough when Karim Benzema tapped home from close range 11 minutes into the second period.
Cristiano Ronaldo then sealed the three points when he bulleted home a header from Isco’s pin-point cross 21 minutes from time.

Barcelona’s shock 1-0 defeat to Malaga on Saturday means the Catalans have it all to do in the final 14 games of the season, with the two sides set to meet at the Camp Nou on March 22.
“I think the defeat surprised everyone because Barcelona were in great form,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said.
“It is clear we have the advantage at the moment, but as I have said many times this league will be decided in the final game,” he said.
Madrid started brightly at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero and should have been well in front by halftime.
Gareth Bale had an early strike ruled out for offside, before Ronaldo smashed an long-range effort off the post.
The World Player of the Year then passed up a huge chance when he miscued with the goal gaping from Bale’s low cross.
Another effort from Ronaldo, this time with his head from a Toni Kroos free-kick, flew just wide as the pressure built and the visitors were unfortunate not to be ahead in stunning fashion when Benzema’s overhead-kick was ruled out for the tightest of offside calls.
Madrid captain Iker Casillas was making his 500th La Liga appearance, but had barely touched the ball until he had to make a smart low save to his right to deny Aaron Niguez two minutes after the break.
Niguez was lucky to stay on the pitch moments later when he only saw a yellow card for a horrific challenge on Bale that fortunately the Welshman was able to shake off.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men finally got the break that had deserted them early in the game on 56 minutes when David Lomban’s clearance from Ronaldo’s low cross bounced off Elche goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton and into the path of Benzema to slot into an empty net.
Ronaldo then ended his three-game goalless streak in La Liga with a wonderful header from Isco’s fine cross to put the game to bed.
THRILLING COMEBACK
Earlier on Sunday, David Moyes’ Real Sociedad struck twice in the final 10 minutes to come from behind and seal a thrilling 4-3 win over Sevilla at the Estadio Anoeta.
The home side had got off to an ideal start when Imanol Agirretxe slotted home the opener after 16 minutes, but Timothee Kolodziejczak leveled for the UEFA Europa League holders before the break.
Sociedad were then gifted a soft penalty at the start of the second period, which Xabi Prieto converted, but Sevilla responded once more when their top scorer Carlos flicked home Ever Banega’s free-kick.
Sevilla then looked set to go on and claim a vital three points in their battle for a return to the UEFA Champions League next season when Kevin Gameiro scored from the penalty spot after a handball by Inigo Martinez inside the area.
However, there was a final twist as Sociedad equalized when Alejandro Arribas turned the ball into his own net, before Prieto flicked home a corner at the near post as the game entered stoppage-time.
Defeat means Sevilla still trail Valencia by five points in the fight for fourth place, while Sociedad jumped three places to 10th and are now eight points clear of the relegation zone.
Villarreal are now just a point behind Sevilla in sixth after substitute Luciano Vietto scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Sociedad Deportiva Eibar.
Athletic Bilbao were also 1-0 victors over Rayo Vallecano de Madrid thanks to Aritz Aduriz’s strike four minutes from time.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Connelly Early on Tuesday struck out 11 in five shutout innings to match a franchise record during his MLB debut against the Oakland Athletics. “Pretty sick performance,” teammate Romy Gonzalez said. “It was fun to watch.” The only other Red Sox starter to rack up 11 strikeouts in his first career game was Don Aase versus the Milwaukee Brewers on July 26, 1977. “It was amazing, just to go out there and have that first opportunity,” Early said after getting the win in a 6-0 victory. “A long day of travel yesterday and just getting to the field, seeing
Mikel Merino on Sunday scored a hat-trick as a majestic Spain thumped Turkey 6-0 away in World Cup qualifying, while a brilliant Florian Wirtz free-kick helped Germany beat Northern Ireland 3-1 to get their bid up and running. European champions Spain were in unstoppable form in the central Turkish city of Konya, claiming their second biggest-ever away win in World Cup qualifying as Arsenal midfielder Merino scored his first professional hat-trick. Barcelona playmaker Pedri Gonzalez opened the scoring inside six minutes and later completed the scoring, with Ferran Torres netting the visitors’ other goal. The quality of Merino’s strikes was remarkable, with his
ELEVEN STRIKEOUTS: Blake Snell allowed two singles and two walks against the Rockies as he ended a personal three-game skid with his first win since Aug. 16 Blake Snell on Wednesday struck out a season-high 11 in six innings, while Mookie Betts hit a grand slam in the eighth as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-0 for their fourth straight win. ‘DEVASTATED’: Argentina’s win was a reversal of their 28-24 defeat last week, with Australian forward Fraser McReight adding that ‘we did the same thing last week’ Argentina flyhalf Santiago Carreras punished an undisciplined Australia with 23 points off the tee as the Pumas held on grimly for a 28-26 win in Sydney yesterday to breathe new life into their Rugby Championship campaign. A try-fest beckoned in afternoon sunshine at Sydney Football Stadium, but Argentina needed only one through captain Julian Montoya, with Carreras doing the damage with seven penalties and a conversion in front of a sell-out crowd. A week after letting a 14-point lead slip in a 28-24 defeat to Australia in Townsville, Argentina saw most of a 21-point advantage erased in the final quarter as the
