Napoli hand Juve second loss of season

FAINT HOPES STILL ALIVE:Second-placed AS Roma took advantage of SSC Napoli’s 2-0 win over Juventus as they closed the gap to 11 points by beating lowly US Sassuolo

AP, ROME

Competing for a spot on Italy’s World Cup squad, it was the fourth consecutive match in which Destro had scored and it was his 10th goal since beginning his injury-delayed season in December last year.

Sassuolo thought they had a chance to equalize in the 35th minute when referee Nicola Rizzoli — Italy’s World Cup representative — appeared to change his mind several times before denying the hosts a penalty for minor contact between Roma defender Mehdi Benatia and Nicola Sansone.

Roma substitute Michel Bastos sealed the victory with a goal six minutes into stoppage-time after being set up by 37-year-old Roma captain Francesco Totti, who replaced Destro in the 79th minute.

Playing their first season in the Serie A, Sassuolo remained one point above last-placed Catania, who were due to visit Udinese yesterday.
