Taiwan blank Guam in East Asian Games opener

By Paul Huang  /  Contributing reporter

Yang Chih-lung tossed five scoreless innings with three hits, Chen Ping-chieh drove in three runs with a pair of hits and Taiwan blanked Guam 15-0 in six innings at the Tianjing Sports Center’s Baseball Field yesterday to win the opener of this year’s East Asian Games.

After a slow start by the favorites, who managed to plate only one run against the sound pitching of Guam over the first two innings, Taiwan’s offense finally came alive with four hits and three walks for seven runs in the third to blow the game wide open.

By the end, Taiwan had racked up 13 hits with five players hitting more than once.

“We did not quite have the kind of start we wanted, but we were able to make the necessary adjustments at the plate by the third to blow it open,” a very pleased Taiwan skipper Lu Ming-tsu said after the game.

Next up, Taiwan face Hong Kong who lost to China by a 9-0 margin in their opener yesterday afternoon to start this year’s competition on a down note.

The opening pitch is scheduled for 9am today with Huang Sheng-hsiung having been slated by Lu to take the mound for Taiwan.
