STORMERS 20, REDS 15
AP, CAPE TOWN, South Africa
The Stormers dented the Queensland Reds’ playoff hopes with a win on Saturday, with discarded Wallabies flyhalf Quade Cooper and his team off-color for the second straight game in South Africa.
South Africa captain Jean de Villiers’ try early in the second half was the decisive play in a grinding match at a windy and rainy Newlands in Cape Town, helping to end the Stormers’ three-match losing streak and leaving Queensland six points behind the ACT Brumbies at the top of the Australian conference standings.
De Villiers was set free on the left wing after a cross-kick from the Stormers in a planned move near halfway.
Cooper kicked five second-half penalties, but Stormers fullback Joe Pietersen matched that in a relieving win for the struggling Cape Town team.
