PCCT claim trophy in rain-hit contest in southern Taiwan

By Andrew Carrick  /  Contributing reporter

Pakistan Cricket Club Taiwan (PCCT) reinforced their No. 1 status on the Taiwanese cricket scene by claiming last weekend’s Taiwan Daredevils Champions trophy in Chiayi.

PCCT won both their games in Saturday’s group matches, but all of Sunday’s games were washed out by heavy rain.

Under tournament rules, PCCT as the team that topped Saturday’s group stage were named champions.

Saturday’s games got underway early with Royal Indian Cricket Club producing the shock of the day by beating hosts Daredevils by six wickets.

Royals skipper Arul Balaji starred with both bat and ball, taking 1-9 in three overs.

PCCT knocked off a challenging score of 146-7 posted by Indian Cricket Club (ICC) with two overs to spare.

They then proved too strong for arch-rivals Taiwan Daredevils, a below-par score of 116-3 off 15 overs still proving too much for the Daredevils, who could only post 88-5 in reply.

The day/night match was a one-sided affair as ICC’s 124-6 was too much for the Royals who ended up 34 runs short when they batted.

The improving ICC finished runners-up and look like the only team capable of knocking PCCT off their perch.

Next on the local cricket calendar is the Taiwan Cricket Sixes in Chiayi in March.
