New York’s Marian Gaborik scored in triple overtime to give the Rangers a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals in the wee hours yesterday morning, taking a 2-1 lead in their NHL Eastern Conference semi-final series.

Brad Richards was near the backboards, before sending a pass in front to Gaborik, who ended the marathon by sliding the puck between the pads of rookie goaltender Braden Holtby.

Henrik Lundqvist had 45 saves for New York. Holtby stopped 47 shots for the Capitals.

Ryan Callahan gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal in the second period. John Carlson tied it for the Capitals later in the period.

The game started at 7:40pm local time and ended at 12:14am. The teams meet for Game 4 tomorrow in Washington.

In Nashville, Tennessee, Pekka Rinne made 32 saves as he returned to his dominant form, helping Nashville defeat Phoenix and cut the series deficit to 2-1.

David Legwand and Mike Fisher both capitalized on errors to score for the Predators just 76 seconds apart in the first period.

After giving up nine goals on the road as the Predators fell behind 2-0 in the best-of-seven matchup, Rinne — a Vezina Trophy finalist — was rarely challenged by the lackluster Coyotes. He helped the Predators overcome the suspensions of forwards Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn, who were punished for violating unspecified team rules.

The series will continue in Nashville tonight.
