Taiwan to host badminton championships next year

Staff writer, with CNA

Taiwan will host the Badminton Asia Championships in April next year, an official from the local badminton association said yesterday.

Tsai Hung-peng, secretary-general of the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association, said members of the Badminton Asia Confederation unanimously accepted Taiwan’s bid to host the event, scheduled to take place from April 16 to April 21 next year in Taipei.

Tsai said Taiwan’s previous experiences in organizing the Badminton Asia Youth U19 Championships in 2001 and the YONEX BWF World Junior Championships last year for athletes aged under 19 helped the country’s bid to host the tourney.

This year’s event — which began on Tuesday and runs through today — is being held in of Qingdao, China, but no Taiwanese players made it into the top eight.
