The Ottawa Senators broke through for their first win in San Jose in eight years by beating the Sharks 4-1 on Thursday in a clash of two of the NHL’s leading teams.
Colin Greening scored twice and Craig Anderson made 36 saves for Ottawa, who have won six of their past seven games to be just one point off Northeast Division leader Boston.
Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson also scored for the Senators.

Brad Winchester scored for the Sharks, whose lead in the Pacific Division was sliced to one point ahead of Los Angeles.
PENGUINS 4, RANGERS 1
In New York, Pittsburgh won a fourth successive game by beating New York, closing the gap between the two NHL Atlantic Division heavyweights.
Richard Park scored the go-ahead goal 2 minutes, 23 seconds into the third period, while Evgeni Malkin padded the lead with two and Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves in Pittsburgh’s victory over New York.
Malkin has 24 goals this season, including seven in four games.
Chris Kunitz also scored for Pittsburgh, who moved within eight points of the Rangers. Carl Hagelin scored for New York.
RED WINGS 3, COYOTES 2, SO
In Glendale, Arizona, Todd Bertuzzi scored in regulation, then spun in front of the net and made a spectacular backhand shot in the shootout to give Detroit their fifth victory in a row, edging Arizona.
Three of the wins in Detroit’s streak have come in shootouts, two of them over Phoenix by identical scores.
Ian White also scored for the NHL-leading Red Wings.
Gilbert Brule and Raffi Torres scored for the Coyotes.
FLAMES 2, KINGS 1, SO
In Los Angeles, Calgary ended a run of six straight road losses by beating Los Angeles in a shootout.
Jarome Iginla scored the tying goal in the second period of regulation, while Olli Jokinen and Michael Cammalleri connected on Calgary’s first two shots in the shootout and goalie Miikka Kiprusoff stopped two of the three shots he faced.
Dustin Brown scored in the first period for the Kings.
Calgary’s victory was Brent Sutter’s 200th as an NHL head coach, this time getting the better of his brother Darryl.
BRUINS 4, DEVILS 1
In Newark, New Jersey, Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell scored in a 35-second span in a four-goal third period that carried Boston past New Jersey.
Defenseman Andrew Ference tied it 3 minutes, 1 second into the period, while Horton and Campbell put the Bruins ahead for good as they made it 3-0 against the Devils this season. Chris Kelly had an empty-net goal.
Petr Sykora scored for New Jersey, who had won three straight.
BLUES 1, OILERS 0
In St Louis, Missouri, Jaroslav Halak made 15 saves for his second straight shutout as St Louis extended their remarkable run of home form by edging Edmonton.
Alex Pietrangelo scored the sole goal with 5 minutes, 14 seconds left for the Blues, who have earned points in a franchise-record 14 straight home games. The Blues are 7-0-1 in January, an NHL-best 20-3-3 at home and lead the league with nine shutouts.
Edmonton have dropped 12 of their past 13 road games.
ISLANDERS 4, FLYERS 1
In Philadelphia, New York snapped a 13-game losing sequence in Philadelphia by beating the Flyers.
Evgeni Nabokov made 40 saves, while Josh Bailey, Matt Moulson, Mark Streit and Michael Grabner all scored for the Islanders.
The victory broke a losing drought on Philly ice that dated back to the 2006-2007 season.

In Winnipeg, Canada, Ondrej Pavelec made 25 saves as Winnipeg extended Buffalo’s franchise-record road losing streak to 11 games.
Andrew Ladd, Tobias Enstrom, Tim Stapleton and Nik Antropov scored for Winnipeg, with Enstrom and Stapleton connecting on two of the Jets’ four power-play chances.
Drew Stafford scored for Buffalo.

In Columbus, Ohio, Pekka Rinne made 38 saves — 18 in the third period — for his fourth shutout of the season, as Nashville defeated lowly Columbus.
Martin Erat had a goal and an assist in a 2 minute, 3 second span, Mike Fisher scored on a power play and Shea Weber had a long-range goal into an empty net.

In Toronto, Phil Kessel scored his team-leading 25th goal to help Toronto down Minnesota.
Joffrey Lupul had three assists, while Nazem Kadri, Joey Crabb and Mikhail Grabovski also scored to help Toronto snap a three-game losing skid.
