Clint Dempsey pounced for an 85th-minute winner as Fulham beat Liverpool 1-0 in a dramatic Premier League match at Craven Cottage on Monday after a rare mistake by goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
The pulsating game, in which Liverpool were reduced to 10 men when Jay Spearing was sent off after 72 minutes, appeared to be heading for a draw when Reina spilled a shot from Danny Murphy and US international Dempsey scored from close range.
Fulham, outplayed in the first half, came back strongly in the second, but Liverpool were on the wrong end of three decisions by referee Kevin Friend which otherwise might have turned the game their way.

Fulham defender Philippe Senderos was lucky not to concede a penalty after 59 minutes when he clattered into Charlie Adam inside the box.
The officials also ruled that Luis Suarez was offside putting the ball in the Fulham net when he looked level with the last defender and Spearing was shown a red card for a foul on Moussa Dembele when he caught the Fulham player with his trailing leg after playing the ball first.
“It’s frustrating because no-one ever tells us what the level of acceptance [from referees] is,” Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish told reporters. “Jay had it in his mind to win the ball and he did win it, but the referee didn’t think so. I don’t think we were going to get anything tonight, were we? The goal that Luis scored could have gone either way and we could have got a penalty when he got pulled down. We did not play as well as we have been playing, but it was enough to win the game.”
Fulham manager Martin Jol thought Spearing should have been sent off.
“It was a bad challenge,” he said, before concentrating on his team’s first league win since the end of October. “It was a very welcome three points, we needed that. We had more space after the sending-off and Clint had a good game, got us a much needed win and I am very pleased. We had the rub of the green tonight, it was an even game, but we took the chance.”
Dalglish also sprang to Suarez’s defense after it was claimed the fiery South American had made a gesture to Fulham fans.
Dalglish said that Suarez enjoyed his and the club’s support, and that others should follow their example rather than criticize him constantly.
“We’ll look after Luis as best we can and I think it’s about time he got a bit of protection from some people,” said Dalglish, who admitted he had not seen the incident involving Suarez and the Fulham fans. “His integrity is impeccable. He can look in the mirror, and go to bed at night and sleep soundly. If other people can do that then fine. All we ask is to be fair, is to be honest.”
“We’ve just got to brush ourselves down and get on with it, and get ready for QPR on Saturday. I’m sure we’ve had the rub of the green in previous games, but not tonight, and we certainly deserved something,” Dalglish said.
Liverpool, unbeaten in their previous 11 matches in all competitions, traveled to Craven Cottage seeking to equal a club record run of seven successive away wins, which included two at neighboring Chelsea in the Premier League and League Cup.
In contrast, Fulham were looking to improve a poor home record in the league in which they had won just one of eight matches since Liverpool won 5-2 at Craven Cottage at the end of last season.
Liverpool went closest to a goal after 28 minutes when a lofted shot from Jordan Henderson beat Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, before hitting the inside of the post and bouncing away.
Substitute Stewart Downing also hit the post for Liverpool in the second half and Dempsey struck the crossbar before scoring.
The win lifted Fulham away from the relegation zone to 13th in the table on 15 points from 14 games, while Liverpool stayed seventh on 23 points, three behind Newcastle United.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
