Los Angeles rookie Mark Trumbo homered and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Angels over the Detroit Tigers 12-7 on Thursday.
Trumbo hit a two-run homer in the Angels’ three-run second. He tripled in the fourth and doubled in the seventh. Needing just a single to complete the cycle, he grounded out leading off the ninth inning.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland was ejected in the third for arguing that a pitch had hit Austin Jackson, and things got hot in the fourth when Brad Penny argued with catcher Victor Martinez.
Tigers starter Penny (7-8) gave up seven runs in 3-1/3 innings.
RANGERS 4, TWINS 1
In Arlington, Matt Harrison worked into the eighth inning to cap his unbeaten month for AL West-leading Texas and beat Minnesota.
Harrison (9-7) allowed one run over 7-1/3 innings with one walk. He won all three of his decisions in his five starts this month.
Twins starter Scott Baker (8-6) allowed two runs over seven innings in his second start since returning from injury.
ROYALS 4, RED SOX 3
In Boston, Billy Butler hit a three-run homer as Kansas City edged Boston.
Royals starter Luke Hochevar (7-8) pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs and just one walk, while matching his season high for strikeouts with six. He retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced and gave up only one extra-base hit.
Kansas City closer Joakim Soria worked the ninth for his 19th save.
Red Sox starter Josh Beckett (9-4) took his first loss in over a month, giving up four runs and three walks.
The defeat cut Boston’s lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East to 2.5 games.
RAYS 10, ATHLETICS 8
In Oakland, Tampa Bay came from five runs down to overwhelm Oakland.
Desmond Jennings hit his first career home run and later added a two-run double in a seven-run seventh inning for the Rays.
B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria also homered. Upton, the subject of ongoing trade rumors, hit his team-leading 16th homer after returning from one game out.
Tampa Bay starter Wade Davis (8-7) struggled early before settling down to retire 17 straight batters.
A’s starter Brad Ziegler (3-2) allowed three runs — including a bases-loaded walk — to take the loss.
BLUE JAYS 8, ORIOLES 5
In Toronto, Edwin Encarnacion and Eric Thames hit back-to-back home runs as Toronto again relied on power to overcome Baltimore.
Encarnacion went three-for-four with two RBIs and scored twice for the Blue Jays, who have won 27 of 31 home games against the Orioles dating back to 2008.
Acquired from St Louis on Wednesday, center fielder Colby Rasmus went none-for-five with two strikeouts in his Blue Jays debut. He was the only Toronto starter not to reach base.
Blue Jays starter Carlos Villanueva (6-2) notched his first win in over a month, allowing four runs in five innings.
Orioles starter Brad Bergesen (2-7) allowed six runs in three innings; his shortest outing of the season. Baltimore have lost eight consecutive series.

The San Francisco Giants welcomed new signing Carlos Beltran by beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Thursday in a clash of National League pennant contenders.
Beltran was none-for-four with two strikeouts in his debut with the defending World Series champions, who won two of three against the major league-leading Phillies in a rematch of last year’s NL Championship Series.
San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum (9-8) threw six scoreless innings with six strikeouts, showing no negative effects from the stomach illness that forced him to push his start back two days.
Pablo Sandoval hit a solo homer for the Giants.
The Phillies had gone a club-record 45 straight games without dropping two straight. Starter Kyle Kendrick (5-5) gave up four runs in 6-1/3 innings.
PIRATES 5, BRAVES 2
In Atlanta, Pittsburgh downed Atlanta to split the four-game series.
Andrew McCutchen, who had been 1 for 11 in the series, had a first-inning single before snapping a 1-1 tie with his fifth-inning double off Derek Lowe (6-9). He added a two-run homer in the ninth.
Pirates starter Kevin Correia (12-8) gave up one earned run in 6-1/3 innings.
Lowe gave up eight hits in five innings in his first career loss to the Pirates. He had been 10-0 with a 2.64 ERA in 10 previous starts against Pittsburgh.

In Cincinnati, New York held off reeling Cincinnati to complete their first-ever four-game sweep at the Reds.
Lucas Duda and Jason Bay each drove in three runs for New York with bases-loaded doubles, while David Wright went three-for-five to extend his hitting streak to seven games (15-for-33, .455) since returning from injury. He was nine-for-19 with five RBIs in the series.
Mets starter Chris Capuano (9-10) snapped a three-start losing streak, allowing eight hits in 5-1/3 innings.
